IT'S SUMMER TIME!

WELCOME TO MY 2022 SUMMER BLOG!

You're right, it's not strictly Summer yet.   But you may recall that I started dividing the year into Summer and Winter to match my Hiking (May-October) and Swimming (November-April) seasons.  There's been a lot of blur in activities over the past several years, but I've kept this designation for the sake of my schedule and because Summer can never be too early!

Many of my Summer Activities stay the same because I still enjoy them.  I do like to mix it up some, though, so this Summer I've tucked in some activities that are variations on a theme and some that are new altogether.  I'll report on all of them as Summer progresses, starting with these.

BLOGGING

Though I do so enjoy blogging, it's fallen by the wayside for a while. Summer content will make it fun.

MEDITATION TEACHER TRAINING

Meditation Teacher Melissa

In my larger intention of  Yoga study, there are 3 areas upon which I want to focus.  The first area is the physical form, Asana.  The second area is Meditation.  The third area is breath work, Pranayama.

I finished my 250 Hour Yoga Teacher Certification with Online Yoga School in March.  The school included a very good overview of all areas of Yoga, and is my primary source for Asana.  Some time ago, OYS offered a deal on their 200 Hour Meditation Teacher Training, so I purchased it.  Because there's no time-line with this school, it was my intention to start MTT after YTT was finished.  That's this Summer.  That's now.

SWAMPING

Sawyer Ron

Definition:  a general assistant or laborer; menial. The term swamper can be used in any labor-intensive work.  I'm using the forestry definition:  A forestry crew job that works as an assistant to a chainsaw-using sawyer.  Ron has told me that during firefighting, one of the jobs of the swamper can be to hang on to the belt of the sawyer while he's cutting a tree and look up for falling branches, aka widow-makers.  If he sees anything coming, he yanks the sawyer out of the way.  No, that's not included in MY duties as swamper!

About half-way through wood cutting season last summer, Ron experienced some discomfort with his safety being out by himself cutting wood.  Ron is very experienced and hyper-safety conscious, but it's dangerous work with a tool that takes no prisoners.  We talked about him possibly being done with wood cutting at all, but decided to try the option of my going out with him.  My role was to be there if something happened, and if nothing happened, help load the wood once it was cut.  That worked out very well.

This summer he's decided he still has some wood cutting left in him.   He's experimenting with how often he can/wants to go out, what with overall age, fatigue, recovery, and his recent hip replacement surgery.  I've offered my swamping services 1x/week. In real life, swamping involves a lot of standing or sitting around without much to do for the 3-4 hours it can take to get to the wood-cutting site, cut, then load the wood.  We went out last Friday and I decided to take my camera and see if I could spot some pics.  He was cutting the branch of a tree that was going to fall, and he had a plan in place.  I decided I had enough time to snap a couple of pics; unfortunately my attention was immediately diverted to picture taking and I missed the falling branch.  All ended well, but I made a hard rule:  If the saw is running, I'm paying attention.  Sometimes there are breaks for chain sharpening, etc.  That's when pics can happen.  And really, one can't complain about being out in the forest in the early morning, the sun warming up, the air clear and fresh, the quiet....except for the roar of an air-cooled two-stroke gasoline engine.

NBA PLAYOFFS

This is my second year to watch the NBA Playoffs with Ron.  It was a such a blast last year we're doing it again.  I'll also say this again:  it's the most sustained TV watching I've done in my life!  There are two Conferences:  Eastern and Western.  They're currently in the Conference Semi-Finals.   There are endless games, so I've chosen two Western Conference series to watch:   Phoenix Suns vs Dallas Mavericks (natch!) and  Golden State Warriors vs Memphis Grizzlies.  These are fast-playing teams, well matched, and a lot of fun to watch.

Summer just started.  Plenty more to come!

Golden rays of sun
Sweet breeze caresses softly
Perfect summer's day
