January, In Sum

New Year's Day, Ron and I went our separate ways for the morning.  For several years he's volunteered to help cut the ice for the local New Year's Day Polar Plunge at Lake Mary.  BRRRRR.  I don't even want to watch! This quote is from the local Nelson Realty website, describing the event:
"The Polar Plunge:  For the nutters amongst us, the annual Polar Plunge is at Upper Lake Mary at noon on New Year’s Day, January 1st, 2016.  Uh, no thanks."  Yeah, I pretty much agree.

This volunteer did the ice-cutting; Ron helped take the blocks of cut ice out of the water.

Some brave Plungers. Does it look like he's taking a deep breath before he....

...goes all the way under?  Yep!  Now that's a nutter!

While Ron was having too much fun, I took advantage of the New Year's Day Pilates class my instructor offered. She's always up for a good workout!

After our respective activities, we met to have lunch at the Cracker Barrel, but a really lot of other people had the same idea.  Not wanting to wait nearly an hour for a table, we returned home and found a satisfactory lunch there.

Saturday, Ron wasn't interested so our friend Clif and I went together to see Jennifer Lawrence in the movie "Joy".

It was good enough, and we enjoy watching Jennifer Lawrence.  Her Hunger Games character pretty much defines her for me, though, so I look for that edge.  I am planning to buy one of the self-wringing mops invented by the real Joy Mangano, on whom the movie was based.  The Swiffer mop I've been using is easy but less than satisfactory in its cleaning ability.  Plus generates a lot of trash.  Hey, a person can find a way to shop, even at the theater!

Sunday started a surge of three El Nino storms.  6 days in a row it snowed, for a total of something like 30".  The real deal!

A walk around the neighborhood:

Ron knocking snow off the biggest aspen in front of the house.  It's still very stooped; we may lose it.

Our yard.  Yep, a lot of snow!

As of January 2, my favorite swimming hole, the pool at the Aquaplex, closed for TWO MONTHS for a three-years over-due replastering work.
.  BOO HOO!  But I like their naming it "Mission Implastable"!

Then on January 12 my Pilates instructor, due with her first baby on January 16, declared herself on maternity leave.  She and her husband welcomed son Everett Zebodiah early the morning of the 17th.  She most graciously gave her faithful clients access to a Pilates website she recommends, Pilates Anytime.

It's not the same as the real thing!  Certainly I've been able to continue other strength workouts I do, and the Aquaplex has a small track and a large variety of cardio machines for days when I need an indoor venue.  Still....with no swimming and no Pilates, my schedule is MESSED UP!

TMI & CRUDE ALERT!  Following the recommended schedule of every-ten-year screening colonoscopies starting at age 50, I fulfilled that duty this month for my 60th year.  I'm pleased to report I'm still the perfect asshole!

In the course of  working out regularly at the Community Center, Ron has developed many friendships there.  We were invited by Betty to join her and her husband and another couple to their house to celebrate Rosemary's 80th (!) birthday.  Betty and Rosemary are the Community Center connections.  It was a delightful party at Betty's place, with an excellent meal provided by her and her husband Jon.  Besides working out, Rosemary volunteers regularly at a local historical site, travels regularly to visit family in friends in New Mexico and Arizona, and has a superb garden.  She's a role model for 80!

"Every man (and woman) should be born again on the first day of January.  Start with a fresh page.  Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances; but on the first day of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past."
